The ACRE agency combines the Assessor, County Clerk-Recorder, and Elections functions, but each division keeps a distinct record set. RecorderWorks is an index, not an online image archive. The web result can show a document number, party names, document type, recording date, and sometimes parcel or map context. The county omits recorded document images online for privacy. Open a document number and select a name in the left menu to expand the documents tied to that party from 1985 forward.

San Mateo County Court Name Lookup
The Superior Court offers two layers. MIDX is a fast, free index for appeals, civil, criminal, family law, probate, and small claims cases. It can search a case number, a person, a business, or a filing date. A wildcard follows the typed letters with an asterisk. Person names need at least two characters, business names need three, and a filing-date search can cover no more than five calendar days.

A match can show the case number, party type, case name, filing date, and source of the index entry. Save the case number before moving to a deeper record request.

Deeper San Mateo County Court Records
Odyssey adds a register of actions, which is the chronological docket of events in a case, plus non-confidential documents where remote access is allowed. No registration is required. Public case information covers civil, criminal, family law, probate, small claims, traffic, and appeals, but family law documents are not displayed. Adoption, juvenile, and mental-health matters are also excluded online.

Cases converted from January 2000 through mid-June 2016 retain older prefix patterns. Newer Odyssey case numbers generally start with the two-digit filing year and a three-letter case type. Criminal cases before 1993 require contact with the Criminal Court Clerk.
Use San Mateo County people records only for lawful personal research. Never use a record to stalk, harass, threaten, or harm another person.
San Mateo County Property Search by Address
Property research is parcel-first, not owner-first. The county's public tax lookup accepts an address or parcel number. County GIS warns that a street address may fail to return all property-specific information, so the nine-digit APN is the stronger bridge. Enter it without dashes or spaces. The official web sources did not confirm a public owner-name search. Inspect the assessment roll at the Assessor counter when the online address or parcel workflow is not enough.
A practical chain is address to tax lookup, tax lookup to APN, APN to the Property Maps Portal, and APN to RecorderWorks. Permit searches can then add an applicant, contractor, permit date, or work description where the public entry displays it. Recorded maps can help when a modern street label does not match the legal land description found in an older deed.

San Mateo County Records Follow Jurisdiction
San Mateo can mean the county, the City of San Mateo, or one of many other Peninsula and coastside cities. That geography changes the keeper. County Accela covers Planning, Code Compliance, Public Works, and building records in unincorporated areas. A parcel within the City of San Mateo uses the city's CSS permit search. Other cities maintain their own clerks and building systems.

Building plans require added authorization and an affidavit for reproduction. A regular California Public Records Act request does not erase those plan-copy safeguards or other limits in law.
This is why the parcel's jurisdiction should be checked early. City limits, postal names, school boundaries, and unincorporated service areas are not the same map.
San Mateo County Vital Records Search
The County Clerk-Recorder issues birth and death certificates for events in San Mateo County and marriage certificates when the license was bought here. No open county name index was located. Requests go in person, by mail, or through the county's approved online vendor. Telephone orders are not accepted. An authorized copy may establish identity and requires an eligible relationship plus the required sworn statement. This human-use trail is especially strong in San Mateo County because court, deed, and historical sources overlap without being identical. One record may supply a middle name. Adoption-related research is different: sealed records require a court order or an authorized California process, so public indexes must not be treated as a way around those controls.

For deeds, obtain the image or copy before drawing a conclusion from the index. For court matters, read the register of actions and disposition, which means the final result of the case, rather than guessing from a filing alone. Stay alert to scams. The county warns that private firms may charge for services the Assessor provides free. Unexpected recorded property documents, missing tax bills, or loan papers for an unknown debt can signal deed fraud. The Superior Court also warns that it will not demand payment or threaten arrest over missed jury service.
